Santa Fe – Lee Roy of Gallup-McKinley County Public Schools (GMCPS) took first place this year in New Mexico’s School Bus Safety Competition (Road-E-O) June 7, 2008, at Milne Stadium in Albuquerque, N.M. Second place went to Brian Padilla of the school bus contractor Mountain Bus Company with the Albuquerque Public School District (APS). Third place went to Anthony Telles with school bus contractor Alice Gonzales Bus Company also with APS.
“Roy has been a school bus driver with GMCPS for the last 15 years,” said Joe Henley, chairman of the NMSBSP. “He has competed at the state level 3 times previously, one time finishing 3rd. He has also won the local road-eo 3 times in the last 10 years. Roy is now the area supervisor for the Crownpoint, New Mexico area, and he does a fine job.”
“The Public Education Department (PED) would also like to recognize the accomplishments of Mr. Roy,” said School Transportation Bureau (STB) Bureau Chief, Carlos M. Santiago. “When compared to other bus drivers from around the state, Lee Roy is the state's No. 1 bus driver. We wished him the best of luck at the National Competition; we knew he would represent New Mexico well.”
Mr. Roy represented New Mexico at the 38th Annual School Bus Driver International Safety Competition, July 19 & 20, 2008, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. When asked about the trip and competition Mr. Roy said, “It was a first time experience and it was a little overwhelming. There were 50 contestants in my category opposed to 7 in the New Mexico competition. I am glad I got to go and represent New Mexico, I had fun.”
The competition had two components, a written examination and a driving course competition. The written exam tested the school bus driver’s knowledge in all areas of school bus operations while the driving course challenged drivers to maneuver a school bus around obstacles and demonstrate their knowledge and skills operating a school bus.
The New Mexico School Bus Safety Program (NMSBSP) and the Public Education Department’s State Transportation Bureau (STB) sponsored this year’s event. Contestants represented all areas of the state. The STB thanks GMCPS Transportation Manager, Joe Henley and co-chairman, Roger Garcia Transportation Specialist for APS, and the entire NMSBSP.
National School Bus Safety Week will be celebrated October 20-24, 2008. For more information on the New Mexico’s School Bus Safety Competition (Road-E-O) please visit the NMSBSP at www.nmsbsp.org. |
